DESCRIPTION

This sepia-toned collotype postcard beautifully reproduces Alexis Grimou's captivating 'Portrait of a Young Man' ('Portrait eines jungen Mannes'). The haunting image shows a handsome young man in three-quarter profile with dark curly hair and penetrating gaze.

His white ruffled collar stands in dramatic contrast against the dark background and clothing showcasing the Baroque mastery of light and shadow. The portrait is presented in an elegant oval format with subtle decorative corner elements that frame the image.

Text at the bottom identifies the artist (spelled as 'GRIMON' on the card) the subject and the museum: 'STAEDEL MUSEUM — FRANKFURT A./M.' A catalog number '30 LL.' appears at lower left confirming this was part of an official museum series.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Alexis Grimou (1678-1733) was a French painter who specialized in portraiture during the late Baroque period. Though less famous today than contemporaries like Rigaud Grimou was highly regarded for his psychological depth and remarkable ability to capture his subjects' character.

His work shows the influence of Dutch and Flemish masters particularly Rembrandt in its use of dramatic lighting and intimate characterization. Grimou's portraits are now held by major museums around the world including the Louvre the Hermitage and of course the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

This postcard comes from one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious art institutions. The Städelsches Kunstinstitut (Städel Museum) was founded in 1815 and houses one of Germany's most important collections spanning 700 years of European art history.

CONDITION

This 100+ year old postcard remains in good vintage condition especially considering its considerable age. The image is clear and well-preserved with all details of the portrait and text visible and legible.

As expected with century-old ephemera the card shows moderate toning/yellowing consistent with its age. There are some minor foxing spots scattered throughout a small corner crease in the upper right and light edge wear around the perimeter.

A small nick is visible on the right edge and there are some minor surface scratches on the image that don't detract significantly from the overall presentation. The postcard remains unused with no writing stamps or postmarks.

AGE/ERA

This museum postcard dates to the early 20th century approximately 1907-1925. The divided back format (with a line separating message and address spaces) confirms it was produced after 1907 when postal regulations were changed to allow this layout.

Early 20th century museum postcards from German collections have become increasingly scarce particularly those dating from before or immediately after World War I. Many were lost to time wars and the fragile nature of paper ephemera.
