VINTAGE PARROT JUNGLE MIAMI FLORIDA POSTCARD - SULPHUR CRESTED COCKATOOS

Description

you're looking at an authentic 1940s linen postcard featuring two majestic Sulphur Crested Cockatoos at the historic Parrot Jungle in Miami Florida. This unused postcard captures a moment in time from one of Florida's most beloved early tourist attractions showcasing these magnificent birds with their striking yellow crests raised in dramatic display.

The artistic rendering presents two white cockatoos perched on a wooden branch against a backdrop of lush tropical foliage and what appears to be a waterfall. The image has that distinctive mid-century painterly quality that only genuine linen postcards possess with slightly muted colors that have developed character with age.

Text at the bottom identifies the scene: 'M-53—Sulphur Crested Cockatoos Parrot Jungle Red Road Miami Florida.'

Historical Significance

Parrot Jungle opened in 1936 as one of South Florida's earliest exotic tourist attractions creating a sanctuary where tropical birds could fly freely among visitors. This postcard represents the golden age of Florida tourism in the post-WWII era when Americans began exploring their country with newfound prosperity and mobility.

Part of the M-series of Parrot Jungle postcards this piece was published by Gulf Stream Card & Distributing Co. of Miami and printed by the renowned Curteich-Chicago company using their signature 'C.T. Art-Colortone' process. The card's identifier '1C-H1234 ' confirms its production in the 1940s.

The reverse features charming promotional text: 'Sightseeing tours in Southern Fla. most always include Parrot Jungle a natural jungle of unspoiled tropical beauty. Brilliant Macaws Parrots and Cockatoos fly about free while Pea Fowl Pheasants Flamingoes and Gouras strut below in georgeous array. Be sure to bring your camera and enjoy Parrot Jungle.'

Condition

This postcard remains in remarkable vintage condition given its 80+ year age. It is completely unused with no writing stamps or postmarks making it especially desirable for serious collectors.

The card shows only light even aging/toning of the paper giving it that authentic vintage patina that cannot be replicated. Corners remain generally square with minimal rounding and edges show only the slightest wear.

There are no tears creases stains or significant damage to this exceptional specimen. Both front and back surfaces retain excellent integrity with the linen texture clearly visible and intact.

Age/Era

This is an authentic mid-century linen postcard from the 1940s during the heyday of American postcard production and Florida tourism development. The lack of ZIP code (introduced in 1963) and the distinctive Curteich numbering system confirm its pre-1950s origin.

The style printing technique and subject matter are quintessentially representative of post-war American optimism and the burgeoning Florida tourist industry. This was a time when exotic attractions like Parrot Jungle were new and captivating to American travelers.

Rarity

Finding unused linen postcards from this era in such pristine condition becomes increasingly difficult with each passing year. This is particularly true for cards depicting the early years of Parrot Jungle an attraction that has since been relocated and renamed (now Jungle Island).

The original Parrot Jungle on Red Road represents a vanished piece of Florida history making ephemera from this location increasingly sought after by both Florida memorabilia collectors and those who specialize in zoological or avian-themed vintage items.

Collector's Note

Vintage postcards like this are rapidly disappearing from the collector market. Each year fewer authentic pieces from this golden age of American tourism survive in displayable condition.

When you hold this postcard you're connecting with a tangible piece of American leisure history—a time when families would visit exotic attractions and send these colorful mementos to loved ones back home. The tactile quality of the linen texture and the vibrant artistic rendering simply cannot be replicated in modern reproductions.

This card would make an exceptional addition to collections focused on Florida tourism bird/wildlife illustrations mid-century ephemera or the history of American leisure attractions. It offers both historical significance and genuine artistic merit in a compact displayable format.
