Somewhere in a well-traveled American woman's jewelry box in the middle of the last century, tucked between a strand of faux pearls and a pair of clip earrings, there was very likely a small souvenir brooch exactly like this one, a memento of a trip taken, or a gift brought home by someone else who had traveled, carrying with it a whole world in miniature. This little fan-shaped pin, carved and painted with real care, would have been the kind of piece pinned to a lapel or a hat for a special luncheon, a small conversation starter that let its wearer say, without a word, that she had an eye for something beautiful and a little bit exotic.

The brooch takes the shape of a Japanese folding fan, rendered in a hard, early molded plastic material, almost certainly celluloid, one of the defining costume jewelry materials of the early-to-mid twentieth century, prized then and now for exactly the kind of rich, dimensional carving and hand-painted detail you see here. The fan's black textured "leaf" is bordered in gilt diamond lattice, and across it bloom carved white chrysanthemum blossoms with gold enamel centers and delicate green leaves, each petal given real dimension rather than simply painted flat. Below, the fan's ribs fan out in cream, red, and orange, converging at a carved red tassel that doubles as the pin's decorative bail end. Flip it over and the reverse of the plastic body shows a soft mint green, a lovely, unexpected little detail for a piece that will spend most of its life facing outward.

The pin finding itself, a simple bent-wire C-clasp rather than a modern rollover safety catch, tells its own story about age; this style of closure was common on brooches through the 1930s to 1960s, before safety-style pin mechanisms became standard, so while we can't give you an exact manufacture year, the hardware alone places this piece confidently in that broader mid-century window. Stamped into the metal pin-back plate is a small crown emblem over the word "JAPAN," clearly legible once we looked closely, marking this as an export piece made specifically for the American and international souvenir market, a genre of jewelry that flourished for decades and is warmly collected today for its craftsmanship and its charm. We looked for any additional maker's name or brand beyond that country-of-origin stamp and found none, so we are presenting it honestly as an unbranded Japan-marked souvenir piece rather than attributing it to a specific known maker we can't actually confirm.

We want to describe this brooch's condition with real care, the way it deserves. The front-facing painted and carved details, the white petals, green leaves, gold gilt trim, and the red-and-orange rib lines, remain bright and glossy, and we did not find chips, cracks, or flaking paint anywhere on the piece even under close inspection. A few faint dark specks are visible within the texture of the two largest flower petals, which could be tiny embedded dust particles or minor natural mottling in the pigment from age, not damage. On the reverse, the silver-tone pin-back plate shows a genuine tarnish patina consistent with real age, along with some lint and fine fiber debris caught in the hinge and clasp mechanism, the ordinary residue of decades spent nestled among other jewelry in a drawer or box, easily cleaned but present as photographed. The pin stem itself is straight with a sharp point, and the hinge and C-clasp catch both appear structurally sound. We found no cracks in the plastic body itself and no missing pieces anywhere on the brooch. In short, this is a lovely, well-preserved example with only light, honest surface grime and the kind of gentle metal tarnish that comes with genuine age, not a damaged or compromised piece.

There is something particularly satisfying about a well-carved fan brooch specifically, more so than many other souvenir shapes from this era, because the fan form itself gives the carver so much natural opportunity for detail, ribs, folds, a tassel, layered petals, and this piece takes full advantage of that opportunity rather than settling for a flat, simple silhouette. Collectors of vintage Japan-marked celluloid jewelry actively seek out exactly this kind of elaborate, multi-color carved piece over simpler examples, precisely because the extra detail work represents real time and skill on the part of whoever carved and painted it by hand, decades ago, for a market half a world away.

We priced this brooch by comparing it against genuinely similar carved celluloid Japan-marked pieces, weighing both the fan silhouette specifically and the elaborate floral detailing against what comparable pieces have recently asked and sold for, and we leaned toward the higher end of what those fair comparisons support, since this example combines both of those desirable traits together in solid, undamaged condition.

Please look closely at every photograph before you decide, since they show precisely the brooch you will receive. If you have any questions about the material, the mark, or anything else, we're glad to answer honestly rather than have you guess. It will be packaged carefully, with attention to protecting that delicate carved tassel in transit, and shipped promptly. Thank you for taking a moment to appreciate this small, well-traveled piece of mid-century souvenir jewelry, and we hope it finds its way into a collection where its story, and its little painted flowers, continue to be enjoyed.
