The Architectural Soul of Mid-Century Design Imagine a piece of art that doesn't just sit on a table, but commands the entire room. This Mid-Century Modern Brutalist "Castle" bowl is a breathtaking marriage of raw architectural power and vivid, ethereal color. Draped in a deep, pooling turquoise "Fat Lava" glaze, this heavy ceramic piece captures the very essence of the 1960s and 70s avant-garde movement. Whether you are a dedicated collector of studio pottery or a design enthusiast looking for that one "anchor" piece to complete your coffee table, this ashtray offers a tactile, visual experience that modern mass-produced decor simply cannot replicate. It is a relic of a time when decor was daring, heavy, and built to last generations.
In-Depth Specs & Masterful Features This isn't your average vintage find; it is a heavyweight champion of studio art.
Material: High-fired heavy earthenware with a thick, multi-tonal glaze.
Design: A unique "Fortress" or "Castle" silhouette featuring a recessed inner chamber, vertical slotted windows, and bold exterior buttress protrusions.
Glaze: A stunning "Rimini Blue" style turquoise that breaks into deep emerald and obsidian tones in the crevices. The texture is thick and glass-like in the center, transitioning to a matte, earthy finish on the base.
Dimensions: Approximately 7 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches tall (Visual estimate based on proportions).
Condition: Excellent vintage "lived-in" condition. There are minor "flea bite" chips on the edges of the exterior buttresses (visible in photos 8 and 9), which are common in heavy pottery of this era and add to its authentic brutalist character. No structural cracks or repairs were found.
Provenance: This is an unsigned studio piece, heavily reminiscent of the Italian Bitossi works or high-end West German "Fat Lava" imports. Its weight and glaze quality suggest a professional potter's hand.
Why This Item Belongs in Your Life Owning this piece is about more than just "vintage charm"—it is an investment in a vanishing era of handcrafted excellence. As Mid-Century Modern items continue to be absorbed into permanent private collections, "statement pieces" like this fortress bowl are becoming increasingly difficult to find. It serves as a stunning centerpiece for a teak credenza, a functional catch-all for a gentleman’s valet, or a dedicated ashtray for the cigar aficionado who appreciates brutalist lines. This is a lifestyle upgrade; it tells your guests that you value history, texture, and the bold, unapologetic aesthetics of the 20th-century art world. It is a piece that will only appreciate in value as the supply of authentic MCM pottery continues to dwindle.
Care, Shipping, & Expert Handling Because of its significant weight and ceramic nature, this item requires "white-glove" packaging. We utilize double-boxing and premium oversized bubble wrap to ensure this fortress arrives at your doorstep in exactly the condition you see in the photos. To maintain its vibrant glaze, we recommend a simple dusting with a soft microfiber cloth or a gentle hand-wash with mild soap if needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners to preserve the glass-like finish in the basin. We offer fully insured shipping with tracking provided within 24 hours of purchase, ensuring your new investment is protected from our door to yours.
